Marvel's Captain America fights new foe: suicide

Captain America's latest foe is deadlier than the Red Skull: suicide.

The character armed with his trademark shield faces off against suicide in a new story that publisher Marvel Entertainment released Wednesday for free through its website and app.

The toll-free hotline for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is featured in the work, too.

The 11-page story "Captain America: A Little Help" is written by psychologist Tim Ursiny and illustrated by Nick…

Curtain up! Theatergoers see `Spider-Man' return

Curtain up! Light the lights! Spider-Man returned to the stage without any apparent hitches Thursday, a day after two performances were canceled due to a scary fall that left a stuntman seriously injured.

New safety precautions didn't seem to prevent the cast of Broadway's costliest show from hitting the heights in nearly 40 aerial maneuvers.

Before the $65 million show could resume Thursday, producers had to give final confirmation to the state Department of Labor that they…

Review: `Fockers' is house guest that won't leave

Meet "Little Fockers," the latest in Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller's comedy franchise. Grit your teeth through the fairly short though agonizing duration of its stay.

Then wave goodbye in relief as its huge cast of characters departs like the annoying in-laws they are.

"Meet the Parents" from 2000 was a tolerable trifle and 2004's "Meet the Fockers" was a bloated bore. But "Little Fockers" is tasteless trash, filled with abysmally unfunny gags involving vomit, enemas,…

NBC's late-night fiasco tops 2010's stories

What began as a grand, highly promoted experiment in late-night, ended in a fiasco that made NBC a laughing stock and captivated the country.

In January 2010, NBC sought to displace its newly crowned "Tonight Show" host, Conan O'Brien, by restoring Jay Leno to 11:35 p.m. O'Brien, however, didn't go for the 30 minute shift, and the fallout made for one of the most public debacles in network history.

Allegiances were drawn, with many supporting "Team CoCo." In the end, O'Brien…

5 most memorable Jack Nicholson performances

The thoroughly underwhelming romantic comedy "How Do You Know" in no way makes the best use of its starry cast — not Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd or Owen Wilson, and most certainly not Jack Nicholson.

But we're going to be glass-half-full around here and use this as an opportunity to look back at the best of Nicholson's work. Now, given that the man is prolific and we only get to choose five films, this isn't going to be comprehensive. We'll try our best, though, and you're welcome to…

NBC's `Today' show streak hits 15 years

Far more than a malfunctioning alarm clock, Meredith Vieira worried about disrupting The Streak when she joined NBC's "Today" show in 2006.

"Today" has won every week in the morning-show ratings since December 1995, according to the Nielsen Co. Last week the streak reached 15 years, or 783 weeks.

"My one goal was not to mess it up," said Vieira, who co-anchors the show's first two hours with Matt Lauer. "I didn't want to be the one in the anchor chair when we fell from first to…

Growth in sales of digital downloads slows to a trickle

Another year, another dashed hope.

In 2010, the growth in sales of digital downloads, which only last year had been marked and promising, slowed to a trickle, as more consumers plugged into Internet radio and video streaming sites.

Through November 21, total track sales (both albums and individual tracks) are up about 5 percent (assuming 12 tracks equal an album). That gain of 95 million tracks pales in comparison to the 277 million-unit gain achieved in all of 2009. And the…

Jane Fonda has something she'd like to work out: A television series.

"I have a sort of a vision of what it could be and that's all that I'll say," Fonda said in an interview last week. "I think the best, edgiest writing is now on cable television. It's pretty exciting."

Australia readies for Oprah juggernaut

When US talkshow supremo Oprah Winfrey films her show Down Under this month, Karen Ferrazzo will celebrate by hosting a barbecue in her honour, complete with 'Oprah'-inspired snacks.

Ferrazzo, 36, is not expecting the megastar to descend on her home in Melbourne's leafy north for the event -- but the mother of two is fully expecting to get caught up in the 'Oprah fever' hitting the nation.

"Because we didn't win tickets (to Oprah's two Sydney shows) we decided the next best…

Gallery vows ongoing protest against Smithsonian

A Washington art gallery pledged a round-the-clock protest Thursday against what it calls censorship by the Smithsonian Institution for removing a video that shows ants crawling on a crucifix after the Catholic League and members of Congress complained it was sacrilegious.

Transformer Gallery manager Barbara Escobar said the small, nonprofit gallery will show the video piece, "A Fire in My Belly" by artist David Wojnarowicz, in its storefront window every day and night until it's…

Randy Quaid says Canada has saved his life

Randy Quaid said if it weren't for Canada's refugee system, he and his wife would be dead.

The actor made the comment Tuesday as he entered his immigration and refugee board hearing in Vancouver, where he and his wife Evi were picked up last month on an outstanding warrant in the United States.

The pair quickly claimed refugee status and their hearings have been conducted amid their bizarre claims of being hunted by what they call "Hollywood star whackers."

They say many…

Gokey helped get 'Idol' to Milwaukee for auditions

Former "American Idol" contestant Danny Gokey says the show's producers told him he was the reason they looked for talent this year in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee native told the Post-Crescent of Appleton he was blown away because he only placed third but he apparently made an impression. Milwaukee auditions were held for the upcoming season last summer and fall.

Gokey is nominated for the New/Breakthrough Artist of the Year award at the first American Country Awards on Dec. 6.…

Chili Peppers dig up roots in "Oral/Visual History"

Most artists cringe at the idea of showing compromising photos taken in public, but rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers relish the idea.

In fact, they've compiled many of those moments in their first book, "The Red Hot Chili Peppers: An Oral/Visual History."

The coffee table hardback, which recently hit bookstores worldwide, examines the band's storied career, starting with their early days in the Los Angeles underground punk rock scene through their rise to arena favorites in…

Geneva's bleak Elektra is shattering drama

A new production of Elektra in Geneva pares back the stage business to focus on the overwhelming music of Richard Strauss in his shattering drama of obsession and revenge.

The bleakly oppressive sets put New Orleans soprano Jeanne-Michele Charbonnet as Elektra -- one of the most demanding roles in opera -- at the center of attention.

Her powerful but richly lyrical rendition of a role she has sung in Warsaw, London and Berlin garnered repeated cheers from the first-night…
